INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE BATSEEKER 4
INSTALL BATTERIES: On the back of the Batseeker 4, use the fingernail slot indicated by the arrow to lift off the battery cover. Insert two AAA batteries, observing the indicated polarity. Insert the orange striped end of the cover next to the orange stripe on the case and push down until the cover is properly seated. We recommend rechargeable Sanyo eneloop batteries, which have a shelf life of years and are more environmentally friendly. The Batseeker 4 will also work with standard carbon-zinc or alkaline batteries.
OPERATION: The on/off switch is located on the edge next to the bat logo. To turn the unit on, slide the switch toward the orange rectangle. If the batteries are fully charged (greater than 2.7 volts) and correctly inserted, you should hear two short high beeps, this indicates that the microprocessor is running at high speed; if the batteries are partially discharged (2.3 to 2.7 volts), you should hear a high beep followed by a low beep; this indicates low speed. The Batseeker 4 samples bat calls every 1.1ms at high speed and every 2ms at low speed. The frequency of the sampled signal is digitally divided by 10 into the range of human hearing.
TESTING: Jingle some keys near the Batseeker 4 and you should hear a rattling sound come from the speaker on the back of the unit. Avoid covering the microphone port marked by the orange dot on the front of the Batseeker 4. The +/- buttons on the back can be used to adjust the volume. To reduce battery drain, the Batseeker 4 will enter sleep mode after 60 seconds of no ultrasonic activity, awakening when further activity is detected. This feature can be toggled off and on by pressing the + button while turning the unit on (two beeps followed by a low tone indicates that sleep mode is enabled).
CALIBRATION: The Batseeker 4 comes factory calibrated to compensate for background noise. To manually recalibrate, install fresh batteries and place the Batseeker 4 on a flat surface with the earphone jack facing up. Press the - button while turning the unit on. Once the - button is released, the Batseeker 4 will emit a very high beep, listen for about 2 seconds, and produce a descending sequence of tones. It is important to maintain silence during the entire process, when background noise and feedback levels are being measured. The calibration settings will then be saved. Should you accidentally enter calibration mode, switch the unit off before the descending sequence of tones to retain the old settings.
